Set in the coastal village of Walberswick, The Mariners is a thoughtfully designed renovation and extension of a two-storey cottage. This project was undertaken for a private client as a weekend and summer retreat, with a focus on preserving the character of the original dwelling while incorporating modern design elements that maximise light, space and views.

The brief centred on replacing an existing single-storey rear extension that obstructed views from the first-floor bedroom towards the sand dunes and the north sea. To maintain these vistas while adhering to local planning height restrictions, we designed a new extension with a vaulted conical ceiling topped with a rooflight to enhance natural illumination.

The existing cottage was carefully refurbished to maintain its original fabric while upgrading the windows and implementing high levels of thermal insulation. The clients specified a Devol kitchen by Sebastian Cox but otherwise entrusted Azman Architects to define the architectural and material choices.

Inspired by the black Suffolk barns characteristic of the region, the new extension is clad in reeded black aluminium panelling, a contemporary contrast to the traditional pink-painted walls of the original structure. The interior retains a balance between old and new, with red terracotta tiles and brick pavers seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces. Existing floorboards were sanded and resealed to retain the cottage’s historic charm while contemporary materials and finishes were introduced to the newly designed areas.

One of the project’s core challenges was accommodating the clients’ wish to maximise sleeping areas within the compact footprint. By reimagining the spatial layout, we transformed the new extension’s living room into a multifunctional space that doubles as a guest bedroom. The original two-bedroom cottage was successfully expanded into a three-bedroom retreat.

Custom elements included built-in joinery for the master bedroom and bathroom, designed with a minimalist approach. A bespoke wall panelling detail, inspired by the Suffolk coastline, extends into full-height wardrobe doors, creating a seamless and integrated aesthetic.

The external cladding of the new extension employs Gooding Aluminium wall panels – an unconventional application of this material in a residential setting. This innovative use provides a durable and visually striking finish that responds to the coastal environment while offering a contemporary interpretation of local vernacular architecture.

The Mariners project is a testament to the careful balance between tradition and modernity. By preserving and enhancing the existing structure while introducing contemporary interventions, Azman Architects has created a refined and characterful retreat that sits harmoniously within its sensitive coastal setting.
